15 1746 parish baptism record suggests his father Francis was a saddle tree maker

saddle tree (plural saddle trees) The base on which the rest of the saddle is built. Usually based on wood or a similar synthetic material, it is eventually covered in leather or a leatherlike synthetic. The tree size determines its fit on the horse's back as well as the size of the seat for the rider

21 Alexander in 1844

On 24 December 1844, Alexander registered under the Board of Trade act as a fisherman [7]. His ticket, issued at Peterhead, reads as follows:-

Born 24 February 1806, Parish of Rathen, County of Aberdeen
Capacity Fisherman Ticketed 38 years old.
Height 5ft 4 ins. Hair Black
Complexion Sallow Eyes Dark
Bodily Marks None
First went to Sea As Fisherman in 1821
Royal Navy Service None Foreign Service None Can Write No
Place of Residence Ward of Cruden
Issued Peterhead 24 Dec 1844.

So there it is. Alexander was not a big man at 5ft 4 inches in height. He had an olive coloured skin, was black haired and dark eyed with no visible body markings. He first went to sea in 1821 as a fisherman when he was 17 years old. He could not write.

22 Although John started work in a spinning factory in Montrose he gave this up to go to sea. Jessie, his wife, appears to have been close to the Lawson family. As well as living with them in Montrose, I found census evidence that she moved with them to Newport although by this time her husband had been lost at sea. LAWSON, John (P128)
